Living well with cancer

Our Living well with cancer courses are a friendly place where you can meet other people who have cancer, share experiences and learn ways to look after your health and wellbeing.

The courses bring together group support and practical activities to help you feel your best. We cover topics such as healthy eating, gentle exercise, mindfulness and emotional wellbeing.

These sessions are for adults aged 25 and over who live in Swale and have a cancer diagnosis, whether you are having treatment now or have finished treatment.

What will the sessions involve?

Each session starts with a relaxed group chat where you can:

  • Meet people who understand what you are going through
  • share your experiences if you would like
  • Ask questions
  • Learn from others in the group

Our Wellbeing Coaches will lead the discussions and share ideas to help you look after your physical and emotional wellbeing.

The second hour is optional. You can choose to take part in any of the following four week courses:

  • Nutrition
  • Movement
  • Mindfulness

You can join one, two or all three courses depending on what is right for you.

The nutrition course. This course looks at how what we eat can help our mind and body stay healthy. Everyone will receive:

  • A free slow cooker
  • A bag of fresh ingredients each week
  • Simple and tasty recipes to try at home

You will learn:

  • How to eat well
  • Easy ways to make meals healthier
  • How to cook meals in advance
  • How to change recipes to make them work for you, your family and your budget

The movement course. Our qualified fitness instructor will guide you through some gentle exercise movements designed to help you improve:

  • Strength and movement
  • Confidence
  • General wellbeing

This course is suitable for people who have finished their medical treatment and been told that is safe for them to exercise on their own.

Please wear comfortable clothes if you would like to take part.

The mindfulness course. Mindfulness can help you focus on the present moment and manage worries or difficult thoughts. You will learn simple techniques such as:

  • Breathing exercises
  • Grounding activities
  • Keeping a journal

These can help you:

  • Feel calmer
  • Manage stress and anxiety
  • Sleep better
  • Support your emotional wellbeing

How long does the programme last?

The programme is 12 weekly sessions, each lasting two hours. The first hour is for group support and discussion. The second hour is for the optional courses.
